What is Numerology – And How To Use It?

ancient cultures for centuries, although modern scientist pass it off as a pseudo-science.

…yet the results are astonishingly accurate. At least in my experiments anyway. Why don’t you give it a go and decide for yourself.

The discipline typically uses a single digit number, each of which has specific meanings under a series of significant principles that apply to your life. The system works by reducing multi-digit number down to a single digit, 0-9. The only exception to this rule are the master numbers of 11, 22 and 33.

How do you work out the numerological meaning of your name?

There is a school of thought that numerical values relate to a cosmic vibration of the Universe and that results in numerology are not by accident. You can work out an entire numerology chart.

For the purposes of this article I will just concentrate on three of the key areas which numerology can help individuals; personality, destiny and life path numbers.

You can calculate your personality number by adding together the numerical values of your entire name excluding the vowels. You will find the values in the table below.

If your name is different from your birth name, use your birth name, although in some cases it also works for married women and people who have consciously changed their name.

To calculate your personality number, only use the consonants of your birth name. If you have a Y in your name, but it sounds like vowel (Mary, Bryan, Carolyn) do not include it as part of the calculation.

However, if the Y follows a vowel but does not produce the vowel sound (Murray, Toya, Amaya), treat it like a consonant and include the numerical value in your calculation.

Allow me to give you an example using my full name, Richard John Oldale:

9 + 3+8 + 9+4 = 33 (master numbers are not reduced)

J O H N

1+ 8+5 = 14 = 1 + 4 = 5

3+4   +3 = 10 = 1+0 = 1

By adding the value for each of my names (33 + 5 + 1 = 39 = 12 = 1 + 2 = 3) my personality number is 3.

According to seventhlifepath.com a 3 personality is easy-going, great sense of humour, upbeat nature and will go with the flow, but am undisciplined, irresponsible, restless and get bored easily.

I have to say that is a pretty accurate description of me!

Calculating your destiny number

Your Destiny Number is one of the core number of your numerology chart. It gives the reader a good indication of your talents, your shortcomings and the person you strive to be. It is sometimes referred to as your expression number.

To calculate your Destiny number, you use the same principle as above in your personality number, but this time include all the letters in your birth name.

Now add up the numerical value for each of your names and reduce it to a single number. 43+2+4 = 49 = 4+9 = 13 = 1+3 = 4. So my destiny number is 4.

To give you some idea of the accuracy my Destiny number, this is what a professional numerologist explains:

“The number 4 stands for everything that is sturdy, reliable, honest, patient, responsible, conventional, detail-oriented, logical and organized. It is a grounded vibration, one that induces practicality, discipline and focus. Those with 4s in their charts tend to prefer routine and predictability, and are likely more dependable and practical in nature.

On a more negative side, the number 4 can be rigid and stubborn, frugal and dull, lacking tolerance and open-minded acceptance, too serious, and in more extreme cases overly controlling.”

This description does fit my personality, but there are also elements of two and seven that fit my personality as well, so for a bigger picture of who you are and what you should do with your life, read every number of your name individually.

Calculating your life path number

Your life path is calculated by reducing your date of birth into three single digit numbers, one each for day, month and year. You then add the three single digit numbers and reduce it to a one digit number unless the total is a master number; 11, 22 or 33.

For example, my birthday is 30 December 1974 and is broken down like this:

Day: 3 + 0 = 3

Month: 1 + 2 = 3

Year: 1 + 9 + 7 + 4 = 21. 2 + 1 = 3

My life path is therefore 3 + 3 + 3 = 9

Other numerologists calculate the life path number in a slightly different way, but every method results in the same number.

e.g. 30 + 12 + 1974 = 2016. 2 + 0 + 1 + 6 = 9

Master numbers in numerology

The only times you do not reduce a multi-digit number to a single number is when it is one of the three master numbers. Master numbers are 11, 22 and 33. Because the numbers are double the force of the single digit they are recognised as being something above and beyond the ordinary.

Towards the end of the 20th Century, some numerologists began including all same number digits as master numbers (44, 55, 66 etc). However this is not the correct thing to do as it diminishes the understandings in the principle and only true master numbers used by ancient cultures.

And numerology has been used for thousands of years. Modern day historians credit the first century Greek mathematician, Pythagoras as the father of the practice, although some researchers claim numerology was used from the time of recorded history some 10 or 11 thousand years ago.
